* A double blind placebo study was carried out at the Animal Science faculty in the Ludwig-Maximillians University, Munich in 2001. It involved 30 horses all showing symptoms of chronic degenerative joint disease who were trialled for 6 months. The control group received a feed supplement (Pernaval^™) which contained 6g of Perna^® Green Lipped Mussel extract per day. Results of the treatment were evaluated within the parameters of clinical lameness and X-ray examinations. All the horses made significant improvements – 47% showed no more signs of lameness – 23% had clinically improved – 30% showed improvement in movement.

Pernaval^™ has been tested and passed as safe to use by HFL’s Sports Nutritional Supplement Screen for banned substances.
